Sleep Quick Tip - Which breast is next at 3am?
Posted by Nicole on June 12th, 2008
Today’s sleep tip is brought to you by Parent Hacks, a useful site with all kinds of parent tips.
When you are breastfeeding, it’s easy to forget which breast is next in the middle of the night. Most of us know about the safety pin idea, but that could hurt in the middle of the night. Here are some other things you can do to remind yourself which breast is next:
- Lie baby down facing the direction she last nursed, so next feeding you can switch sides.
- Put a hair band around the wrist of the side you last nursed.
- If you wear a ring besides a wedding band, switch the ring to the side you last nursed.
I usually just feel which side is fuller, but sometimes that is hard to tell.
Do you have any middle-of-the-night breastfeeding tips?

This might seem obvious… but make sure what ever position you are in the baby will be safe if you fall asleep. I was nursing in a chair at 3am once and almost dropped her when I started to fall asleep. After that I always positioned things so she didn’t depend on my arms to stay in place!

I actually used an alpha version of our Baby Insights application (www.babblesoft.com) to help me remember which side I fed her on last. I just kept the PDA by my bedside and not only could I look up what side she fed on but what position and when I last fed her.

@Rose I have used my boppy most of the time for that very reason!
@Aruni That’s great! I hardly open my eyes at night, so maybe one of your versions down the line I can push a button and it will say “Feed left”

I use a bracelet and I switch it to the side that I need to nurse next.
